South Sudan Immigrants and Temporary Protected Status (TPS)

Certain immigrants may be eligible for a temporary legal status due to the conditions in their countries that prevent them from returning safely. Temporary Protected Status (TPS) can also be granted to eligible individuals who are already in the United States. When individuals are found eligible by the United States Citizen and Immigrant Services (USCIS), they are no longer removable from the US and can obtain a work permit. Once their application is approved, they can no longer be detained based on their immigration status.

The Department of Homeland Security has announced an extension for TPS for South Sudan starting May 3, 2022, through November 3, 2023. Eligible individuals from South Sudan who have been living in the US since March 1, 2022, can obtain TPS. This allows TPS South Sudan beneficiaries to re-register and retain TPS through November 3, 2023.

TPS for Sudan has been extended over the past three years. TPS Sudan beneficiaries will still maintain their status through December 31, 2022. With this new notice, eligible individuals who have been residing in the US since March 1, 2022, can be granted TPS. This includes previous Sudan TPS beneficiaries. To get the full benefits of this 18-month period, it is highly recommended to file a new application.
