Migration Resource Center (MRC) has been awarded a federal matching grant to empower low-income and ESL taxpayers with education, representation, and advocacy for their issues with the IRS.
MRC was recently awarded an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) grant to create the only Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) available to qualified low-income taxpayers in Staten Island. The LITC Program unites a nationwide network of independent organizations under a shared mission to protect taxpayer rights. This grant helps further the MRC mission to seek justice for immigrants and other low-income community members who lack the knowledge or financial resources to participate in the legal process. Our goal is to enable them to legally live, work, and contribute to their communities.
Our LITC Program, supported in part by this federal grant, provides free tax education, consultation, litigation, and representation for qualified low-income people who have IRS disputes and issues to resolve or, English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) people who have trouble understanding the complex language of the tax process.
One of the ten fundamental rights taxpayers have when dealing with the IRS is the right to an authorized representative of their choice to represent them in their interactions with the IRS. The LITC program protects taxpayers’ rights by providing access to representation for low income taxpayers, so that achieving a just outcome in an IRS dispute does not depend on the taxpayer’s ability to pay for representation.
“Organizations such as Migration Resource Center are privileged to
serve people who are less fortunate. They are a large and hard-working segment of our society. We are trying to clear their path to education, fairness, justice, and dignity.”
Frederik Stefani, MRC CEO
